Title: The Role and Challenges of Multi-Orbit Multi-Band Satellites for 6G
Abstract: The integration of non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) with terrestrial networks (TN) is an ongoing process that enables seamless broadband 6G global connectivity. A crucial stage of this transformation is the evolution from conventional single-orbit and single-band satellite systems to integrated multi-orbit, multi-band (MOMB) architectures. These architectures offer a robust strategy to leverage the complementary strengths of satellites in low earth orbit (LEO), medium earth orbit (MEO), and geostationary orbit (GEO) across multiple frequency bands. Each orbit has a unique characteristic and plays a distinct role: GEO satellites offer broad coverage and stability but at the expense of high latency; LEO satellites support low-latency communication but require complex mobility management and handover solutions; and MEO satellites strike a balance between the two. Similarly, low-frequency bands offer high resilience and penetration, but with limited bandwidth. Alternatively, the high bands support a high data rate but are more susceptible to atmospheric attenuation. Therefore, constructing collaborative architectures that leverage orbit and spectral diversity is vital to unlock the MBMO features. However, this presents several challenges ranging from advanced signal processing and architectural frameworks to system-level integration across orbits and bands. The goal of this workshop is to bring together leading experts from academia and industry to explore the potentials, challenges, and solutions related to MOMB systems. Additionally, it will facilitate discussions on ongoing research projects and experimental demonstrations that address the unique orbits and band requirements for shaping the future of MOMB-integrated TN-NTN 6G systems.
