Title: Robust (De)centralized Online Learning with Performance Guarantee and Its Applications

Speaker: Yupeng Li, Department of Interactive Media at Hong Kong Baptist University

Abstract

Malicious data manipulator reduces the effectiveness of machine learning techniques, which rely on accurate knowledge of the input data. Motivated by the real-world needs, we address problems of robust online machine learning in the presence of malicious manipulation. We propose centralized as well as decentralized online algorithms for different settings for the malicious generators and feedback delay over time. We derive regret bounds for these algorithms and show that they are sub-linear. We further evaluate the proposed algorithms in the real-world application via extensive experiments using real-world data traces. Our experimental results demonstrate their effectiveness. We believe the outcomes may inspire future research in online classification, but also have practical significance that can be conducive to entities for data operators and Internet users.

Bio

Dr. Yupeng Li received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Hong Kong. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Interactive Media at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Before that, he was a postdoc at the University of Toronto. He is interested in developing powerful techniques in trustworthy machine learning, in particular, threat-resilient decentralized online learning, and their applications to networking and social computing. He is excited about interdisciplinary research that applies robust algorithmic techniques to edging problems. Dr. Li has been awarded the distinction of Distinguished TPC Member of the IEEE INFOCOM 2022 and the Rising Star in Social Computing Award by Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence. He has been serving on the technical committees of some prestigious conferences in computer science such as INFOCOM, and was a TPC Chair of the ICDCS Workshop SocialMeta 2023. His works have been accepted in venues like MobiHoc, INFOCOM, ICDCS, JSAC, ToN and ICA. He has been awarded a few national, provincial, municipal and industry competitive research fundings from agencies.
